World War II Registry of Remembrances

"And now the old story has begun to write itself over there," said Carl softly. "Isn’t it queer: there are only two or three human stories, and they go on repeating themselves as fiercely as if they had never happened before; like the larks in this country, that have been singing the same five notes for thousands of years."
From Willa Cather's O Pioneers!

THE BIG READ

Free Copies Available At All Three Branches

THE BIG READ provides our citizens with the opportunity to read and discuss a single book within our community. Vermillion County Public Library invites all book lovers to participate in this exciting program that will be held throughout the months of February and March 2010. THE BIG READ is designed to restore reading to the center of American culture. The Library's goal is to encourage all residents of Vermillion County to read and discuss My Antonia by Willa Cather during this time. There will be many programs discussing the book and the time period.

The Big Read is an initiative of the National Endowment for the Arts designed to revitalize the role of literature in American popular culture and bring the transformative power of literature into the lives of its citizens. Created by the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with the Institute of Museum and Library Services and Arts Midwest, the Big Read aims to bring the power of reading into the lives of Americans. The Big Read will work with multiple partners across the country to encourage citizens to read for pleasure and enlightenment.
